What Are the Others Doing?

A well-planned, teacher-led Guided Reading lesson takes approximately 15- 20 minutes. The lesson may take up to 30 minutes with older students. The independent or group activities for the remainder of the class should be planned to last for approximately 15-20 minutes to support classroom organisation.

Students not working with the teacher must be actively engaged in activities that support their learning. This can be organised in many different ways. It might involve the students in group work organised through task boards, independent activities, paired work or contracts.

Contact us for more information on exploring this important area of classroom organisation for workshops on this topic.

In conjunction with this topic Wendy Bean has developed the Guided Audio series: a set of CD's that provide an additional guided reading session for students to take part in independently while the teacher conducts the primary Guided Reading session with a group.
